Polestar expands its business in the boating sector by becoming a provider of charging and battery systems to Swedish hydrofoil , a company that makes electric boats, Candela.
Two Swedish companies signed a multi-year supply contract which is among the first direct collaborations in battery technology with companies from the marine and automotive industries. Through the combination of Polestar’s battery together with Candela’s groundbreaking electrohydrofoil technology, both companies are aiming to accelerate the development of electric mobility that is sustainable in society.
This is huge for Candela since it guarantees an uninterrupted battery supply and permits it to avoid the “prohibitively expensive cost of marine batteries used in electrical boats.” Electric boat builders have typically been relying on smaller, local vendors with marine battery pack. Insufficient supply and the high price of these packs are two of the reasons that have hindered electric boats from being able to compete to ICE vessels.
With the help of computer-guided hydrofoils that elevate the hull above the water and Candela’s electric vessels “fly” over the surface, and consume up to 80 percent less energy in high speed compared to traditional motorboats. Candela’s boats, that cruise at speeds of 30 knots, create no emissions and have minimal sound that improves the comfort of passengers and enhances the cruise than traditional boats.
Polestar announces that it will supply batteries and charging systems to a third-party this is the first time for Polestar as an EV manufacturer, is the beginning of a larger-scale collaboration with Candela. Both companies are looking forward to exploring other possibilities for collaboration in the future.
