Porsche Taycan New Software Range Test

Just a few weeks ago, Porsche revealed an extensive software update that would upgrade many components of its Taycan fleet, with over 75,000 vehicles in service. One particular improvement? Driving range.

To confirm the automaker’s claim, we contacted them and requested to test Taycan with its new software by running it through InsideEVs’ 70 mph range test.

Porsche granted us the unique privilege of being the first outlet to drive a Taycan equipped with updated software that all 2023 vehicles will feature as standard, and it’s available now for download at any dealership for previous-year models.

Our luxurious test vehicle was an alluring 2022 base Taycan in icy Frozen Berry. It may have been the first car of its kind to arrive on US soil, making it even more special with 2023 software already installed.

To put the range of the new RWD base Taycan to a test, we’d have preferred if it was an all-wheel-drive model since Porsche revealed that these vehicles will observe even more range growth over previous years. Although still impressive at 225 miles, EPA ratings topping out in favor of AWD models.

Porsche’s extensive testing found that impressive efficiency gains could be achieved by disabling and de-powering the front electric motor on AWD models with new software. By doing this, they noticed a substantial difference when driving in normal conditions within the range of the vehicle.

When a vehicle is in motion or at rest, axles that are free of drive torque enable freewheeling. This lessens the frictional drag which leads to increased mileage for your automobile.

Our most recent 70 mph range test with a rear-wheel drive Taycan further proved the impressive power of its software enhancements. Last year, this same exact vehicle tested 297.3 miles under more ideal conditions; however, even in harsher elements such as strong winds and difficult terrain, we still managed to go 305.6 miles without fail! Clearly, the Tesla Taycan is ready for any adventure life throws its way.

Had the conditions remained consistent, we anticipate that the Taycan with its new software could’ve gone a few more miles and achieved somewhere in the range of 310-315 total.
