The results are in for the Euro NCAP safety tests of the final group of cars slated for release in 2022, and the much-anticipated Volkswagen ID. Buzz is among them.
The all-electric large MPV scored the maximum five-star rating, tied with 11 out of the 14 recently tested models.
The rear-wheel-drive Volkswagen ID. Buzz (with a 150 kW electric motor) garnered pretty good occupant protection in Euro NCAP’s estimation. They put Adult Occupant protection at 92% and Child Occupant protection at 87%.
The Volkswagen ID. Buzz is a heavy car – 2,384 kg. This is partly because the battery is 82 kWh. If they release a version with a higher-capacity battery, it will be even heavier. It would also have an all-wheel-drive powertrain on top of that weight.
The ID. Buzz’s most significant problem appears to be its Vulnerable Road Users protection score of 60%. However, we believe this is mostly due to the van’s front shape.
In terms of Safety Assist, Euro NCAP says that ID. Buzz scored 90% of the 2022 test protocol, which is mostly in line with modern BEVs (multiple models were within ±5 percent points of that). On the other hand, Volkswagen must work a little bit harder if it wants to match Tesla (98% result in the Model S) or even NIO ET7 (95%).
