BMW i3 Production Comes To An End: 250,000 Were Made

The production of BMW i3/BMWi3s has ended after 250,000 units were made over eight and an eighth of a year.

The BMW i3 was manufactured by the BMW Group plant in Leipzig, Germany, and sold in more than 74 countries around globe.

It was a revolutionary model for the company it was the first battery-electric series model by BMW and among the first all-electric stand-alone models to be sold on the market.

The BMW i3 was a very special car, as it was equipped with an interior passenger cell constructed from carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) and an aluminum chassis.

Apart from the 100% electrical I3/i3s (sporty version) it also offers the REx (range-extender version) of the i3/i3s with the option of a small gasoline engine for use in emergencies.

The first variant of this car featured an 21.6 kWh lithium battery (18.8 usable kWh) which was later replaced with an 33.2 kWh as well as 42.2 kWh that could provide up to 307 kilometers of the WLTP range.

With over 250,000 units sold worldwide it's also the most popular electric vehicle in the top compact segment, as per BMW.

The final units made by BMW i3 were produced in the middle of June 2022. The last 10 models are unique BMW i3s HomeRun Edition. Customers were invited to watch the completeness of the vehicles inside the hall of assembly.

– two new BMW Individual paint finishes: Frozen Dark Grey or Frozen Dark Red II – 20-inch light-alloy wheels that have double-spoke style – A glass roof that is operated electrically – solar control glazing – Headlights with adaptive LEDs – premium Suite interior design with features such as Vernasca Leather upholstery in Dark Truffle and an instrument panel with leather and a steering wheel made of leather with galvanised trim and an Carum Grey roof lining, ambient lighting and the welcome lighting.

A few parts of BMW i3/i3s EV components, like drive units or battery modules were also utilized for other EVs. Particularly, e-drive parts are utilized for MINI Cooper SE.

MINI Cooper SE (although they are used in the front-wheel-drive configuration). Battery modules are in Streetscooter vehicles used in those who operate the German post office.

In the coming year in the coming year, next year, the BMW Group Plant Leipzig will be the world's first BMW Group manufacturing facility to manufacture simultaneously BMW as well as MINI models.
