Vietnamese electric car maker VinFast is opening dealerships in U.S.

Vietnamese automobile maker VinFast will launch the doors of six U.S. dealerships this week and will open 30 dealerships before the end of 2022 and all of them are located in California.

The company will cut the ribbon at the stores located that are located in Berkeley, Commerce, Corte Madera, San Diego, San Mateo, and Santa Monica on July 14th.

Two SUVs initially

One is the two-row VF8 electric SUV priced at around $40,700. It is powered by 402 horsepower from two electric motors. The company claims to have a range that could reach 292 miles.

As we've noted in numerous instances electric vehicles or trucks as well as SUVs cost more than counterparts powered by gas.

However, the EPA hasn't yet weighed in on this. These numbers are derived from European tests, which tend to calculate greater distances as opposed to American tests.

The third model is the 3-row VF9 priced from 55,000. It has the same powertrain as the VF8 but boasts up to 369 miles in distance (with the same limitations) because of a larger battery.

Batteries for lease, not sale

Batteries are the most intriguing element in the VinFast story. The company initially will allow customers to join to batteries instead of purchasing one.

Two subscription plans - one that has unlimited mileage and another with a 310-mile limit of driving per month are available.

Battery performance decreases for EVs as time passes. The benefit of a subscription VinFast states, is that VinFast guarantees to take care of any batteries that fails to reach 70% promise capacity.

In the beginning, an unlimited mileage subscription is $110 per month for the 2 row VF8 and $160 monthly for the more spacious VF9.
