New information has surfaced regarding Volvo Cars' future electric vehicle plant in Slovakia that will begin making the next generation of EVs in 2026 following the company's $1.25 billion funding.

Volvo Cars' head of global manufacturing, Geert Bruyneel, confirmed to Automotive News Europe that electric vehicles made in Slovakia will utilize an upgrade to SPA2.

And that the new architecture is the company's most advanced in the initial stages of production. The development of the SPA2 design to be implemented in Kosice will be handled by Volvo.

Bruyneel and Volvo's head of industrial strategy Erik Severinson, declined to specify which vehicle will be produced at the new plant located in Kosice, Slovakia.

The company uses the current version of SPA (Scalable Product Architecture) for models like that of the Volvo XC90 and XC60 midsize and small luxury SUVs.

If Volvo plans to expand its electric motors or batteries in Kosice, the Kosice manufacturing facility, Bruyneel said that while the decisions have to be taken, Volvo has room to expand as needed.
